Stormwater Management Master Plan Update

In 2009, the Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority (LSRCA) implemented the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan (LSPP) in order to reduce discharge of pollutants, phosphorus, and restore self-sustaining cold water fish communities as further identified in the plan. Municipalities were given 5 years to implement Stormwater Management Master Plans from the date the LSPP came into effect.

In order to meet the requirements, the Town of Innisfil (Town) created a two-part Comprehensive Storm Water Management Master Plan (CSWM-MP). The first part of the CSWM-MP (Stormwater Management Plan Part 1) was completed in 2012 and can be viewed on the Town’s website under the following link: Stormwater Management Master Plan Part 1(External link)

The second part of the CSWM-MP (Final Comprehensive Stormwater Management Master Plan) was completed in 2016 and can be viewed on the Town’s website under the following link: Comprehensive Stormwater Management Master Plan

(External link)

The CSWM-MP completed in 2016 provided a 10-year capital project implementation plan. Since it's acceptance, various Storm Water related Town projects have been designed and constructed to improve stormwater quality within the Town of Innisfil.

In order to remain compliant with the LSPP and the Town of Innisfil's needs, the Town has begun the process of updating the Stormwater Management Master Plan (SWM-MP).

Innisfil Flooding Strategy

Flooding has been a growing concern within the Town of Innisfil as flooding events continue to increase due to development of upstream lands and the side effects of global warming. Flooding due to snowmelt events, heavy and prolonged rainfall events, ice jams and or a combination thereof are increasing. In recent years, more short duration heavy rainfall events have become more frequent which has been a major contributor to many flooding events experienced within the Town.

Flooding possesses an extreme hazard to people, property, and the environment. Though flooding can be experienced anytime throughout the year, the largest flooding events can be experienced during the spring thaw which usually occurs anytime from March – May. As detailed in the Ontario 2020 Flooding Strategy, flooding is considered the most significant natural hazard in Ontario.

Within the Town of Innisfil, various creeks, tributaries, and channels travel through private properties, under roadways, and confined areas with various aged development. The Town's Operations Staff dedicate many resources preparing for and dealing with major flooding events. Annual flooding has been an increasing concern to the community.
